Excavator / Digger & Dumper Training

Industrial Training Services Ltd provide excavator / digger & dumper training throughout the South & South East of England. There is no specific legal requirement to hold a certificate to drive an excavator / digger or dumper, on construction sites or elsewhere.
However to comply with Health and Safety legislation in construction all operators should be trained and competent to operate the equipment that they are using. There are a number of ways to achieve this competency, generally the most accepted would be to hold a Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) card for the appropriate category of equipment.
Many construction sites insist excavator / digger & dumper operators hold a CPCS card, however there are a number of other options:-
  • National Plant Operator Training Scheme (NPORS)
  • LANTRA for Landbase applications (LANTRA)
  • National Operator Registration Scheme (NORS)
If you are to be sure your excavator / digger or dumper training will cover you in all industries, then a CPCS card is the most accepted.

All excavator / digger & dumper training will be delivered by a qualified instructor with a maximum trainee to machine ratio of 3-to-1 ensuring adequate practice time on the machine can be achieved.

Excavator / Digger Training

Excavator / digger training for novice operators will be a 10 day course with an option of taking a CPCS achievement test.
Excavator / digger training for Semi experienced operators will be a 5 day training course with the option of taking the CPCS achievement test.
Excavator / digger testing for those excavator / digger operators that are fully experienced and are confident to just take an excavator / digger theory & practical test.

Dumper Training

Dumper training for novice operators will be a 3 day course with an option of taking a CPCS achievement test.
Dumper training for Semi experienced operators a 2 day training course with the option of taking the CPCS achievement test.
Dumper testing for those dumper operators that are fully experienced and are confident to just take the dumper theory & practical test.
Excavator / Digger & Dumper training can be carried out on customer sites, however excavator digger & dumper CPCS testing must be carried out at an accredited training provider site.

Excavator / Digger training practical 360° Crawler above 10 Tonne:
  • Basic construction, names of components and the purpose and use of all controls and gauges.
  • Use of all the operators' handbook, other information sources, Approved Codes of Practice and legislative documents.
  • Pre-use, start, running checks and close-down procedure.
  • Preparing the excavator / digger for site and road travel.
  • Travelling the excavator / digger over different terrain, including rough, undulating ground using different wheel drive and steer combinations.
  • Manoeuvring, progressing to confined spaces in a forward and reverse direction.
  • Positioning and setting the excavator / digger to excavate.
  • Precautions and actions for underground and overhead services and other hazards.
  • Soil and material characteristics.
  • Excavating below ground level.
  • Loading vehicles and hoppers.
  • Backfilling, grading, spreading and levelling different types of terrain.
  • How to remove and re-attach different buckets + quick hitch.
  • How to place the excavator / digger into an out-of-service condition.
  • How to load and unload the excavator / digger on and off a transporter.
  • Trained Operator Achievement Test if required.
Forward tipping dumper training:
  • Basic construction, names of components and the purpose and use of all controls and gauges.
  • Use of the operator handbook, other information sources, Approved Codes of Practice and legislative documents.
  • Pre-use, start, running checks and close-down procedure.
  • Preparing the dumper for site and road travel.
  • Travelling the dumper over different terrain including rough, undulating ground while unloaded and loaded.
  • Travelling up and down substantial inclines in a loaded and unloaded state.
  • Manoeuvring the dumper and progressing to confined spaces in a forward and reverse direction.
  • Positioning the dumper to receive loads.
  • Loading procedures.
  • Load characteristics, integrity and security.
  • Discharging loads into trenches and over edges.
  • Placing the dumper in an out-of-service condition.
  • Loading and unloading the dumper on and off a transporter.
  • Trained Operator Achievement Test if required.
